David Boote's progress

Club Champion David Boote had a productive Easter, retaining his Surrey Boys County Scratch Matchplay Championship title and representing the Surrey Men's First team in a match against Berks, Bucks and Oxon.

In the Surrey U18 Matchplay Championship at Hindhead Golf Club, David scored an emphatic 7&6 victory in the final over Betchworth Park player Ben Stokoe. He took the lead with a birdie at the second hole and did not drop another shot until the 10th, by which time he had opened up a seven hole advantage from which it was impossible for his opponent to come back.

Earlier in the same week, David secured 1.5 points out of two in his matches for the Surrey Men's First team, winning his singles game and halving his morning foursomes match with partner Andy Devonport after being four holes down with five to play. Surrey beat Berks, Bucks and Oxon by 8.5 points to 6.5.

Last weekend, David was in action in the prestigious "Duncan Putter", a Wales Men's Order of Merit event staged at Southerndown Golf Club near Bridgend. He finished in 9th position overall, winning the individual prize for the best score by a Wales player under the age of 21.

David continues to maintain a position within the top 200 of the R&A's World Amateur Golf Rankings and his handicap has now reached minus 2.4 exact. In the coming weeks he is scheduled to play in the Clwyd Open, the Welsh Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship and the Lytham Trophy, all high ranking tournaments on the men's amateur circuit.

David Boote moves up the rankings

Following solid performances this year at the Portuguese and Spanish Men's Amateur Golf Championships and the European Nations Trophy, current club champion David Boote has risen rapidly up the R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings.

David started the year in 615th position but after mid field finishes in Lisbon, Majorca and Sotogrande, has climbed to 191st on the World Amateur list. He is now the 40th placed European and ranked the 11th highest player in Great Britain and Ireland.

After gaining exemptions from the Golf Union of Wales into the Portuguese Amateur at Montado and the Spanish Amateur at Alcanada, David was selected to play for the four man Wales Men's team for the European Nations Trophy at Sotogrande Old Course in Spain last week. This is considered one of the major championships in the men's amateur game with 18 National Federations sending representative teams to a course rated as one of the top ten in Europe.

David finished 42nd out of the 72 competitors in the prestigious event and was the second placed Wales player.

Over Easter, David has been invited on an "official visit" to Stanford University, where he will take up a golf scholarship in September, to view the US Intercollegiate Championship. He will also be representing the Surrey 1st team against Berks Bucks & Oxon at Caversham Heath and has once again reached the final of the Surrey U18 Scratch Matchplay Championship to be played at Hindhead Golf Club, where he will be defending the title he won last year.

We will keep you updated on David's progress throughout the year, but if you are unable to wait please click on the below link to view David's profile on the R&A website -

He was also recruited by Virginia, Arizona State, Tennessee, Augusta State and Auburn but made his decision to join Stanford which is listed at #2 in the Times Higher Education World University rankings and has arguably the best golf course and practise facilities in the NCAA Division 1.

David is the first European student to be offered a golf scholarship to Stanford in over 10 years and will join a roster of highly ranked players in the World Amateur Golf Rankings . The Head Coach ,Conrad Ray, led Stanford to the NCAA National Golf Championship in 2007 and his Assistant,  Philip Rowe, played for GB&I in the 1999 winning Walker Cup team before earning All-American honours as a senior and then playing professionally on various world tours for 8 years.

The Stanford Golf program has furthered the careers of many notable players including Tom Watson and Tiger Woods.

In early October he was a member of the Surrey Mens 1st Team which won the Daily Telegraph EGU SE Region League Final against Hertfordshire and he also recently won the Kingswood Mens Golf Club Championship for the second year in succession. He has recently received invitations to the Junior Jones Cup in Georgia and the Junior Orange Bowl in Miami in December.
